5 Disturbing Films (see how passive I am?)

Martyrs (2002)

This movie is about revenge. A woman who was kidnapped and tortured as a child and a friend who was abused as child decide to go after the people who abducted her. Pretty standard story…but not so much.

This movie is a sensory assault, dark and blank, but just tosses you right into it. I am not sure I have seen so much depravity in one movie. I think I muttered “What the hell?” a dozen times, and “hell” is the correct word because is sure is. Stomach clenching moments abound. If brutal and sadistic is what you are in the mood for, this is your movie!!!

Gore factor in this ranks pretty high.

2) Deliverance (1972)

The Cahulawasee River floods in Northern Georgia and 4 friends from the city decide they are going to take a few days of a canoe trip. They are aware that the area is isolated and the people pretty back woods, but they do not have any idea that back woods also means generationally inbred. The battle to survive ensues.

Okay, I know, I know you are like Deliverance?? How is that even horror?? Well, I bet if you were one of these four you would think it was pretty horrifying. Most particularly Ned Beaty as he is squealing. I think part of the horror is just how bleak and alone a lot of the shots are, it really feels like you are trapped while watching it. The whole movie is stepping blocks up suspense. Burt Reynolds was pure awesomeness as the machismo, vest with no shirt, look at my hairy parts, asshole! And how can you not find yourself repeating ” He got a real pretty mouth, ain’t he?” to just about everyone you see for at least a week after watching it???

3) Old Boy (2003)

A man is suddenly kidnapped and held captive for 15 years in a dank cell. Then just as suddenly he is released, given clothes, a phone, and money but no explanation. He goes about to trying to find out why and seek his vengeance for his stolen years, only to find out that his captor is not done with him.

This movie is about pain and suffering. It is beautiful and disturbing, and a very strong stomach is needed.

4)The Human Centipede (2009)

Mad scientist kidnaps and mutilates 3 tourists in order to reassemble them into a new pet, created by stitching their mouths to each other’s rectums. Think I just gagged a little typing that.

Okay, why this one?? Seems like it should be under campy? Well, first off if you did not just find that whole stitching mouths onto rectums to create a centipede a little disturbing, I might be afraid of you.

This movie is almost gore less..yes blood and guts are missing. It leads so much up to your imagination that it really is a lot worse than just seeing it all hang out there. The word Tension is on full alert here and makes up for what the plot totally lacks. The “Mad Scientist” is stone cold flawless. There will be some pillow clutching in this one, or if you are like me you use a pillow to hold up in front of your face but only blocking half the screen , that way it is only half as bad. (what?? You should try it, makes you feel like less of a ninny).

5) Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002)

This is the second in the Vengeance trilogy (Lady Vengeance being the last) and just as good. A deaf man’s sister is in need of a kidney transplant and he is not a match. After getting fired from his job, he meets illegal organ dealers. They propose that he will give him one of his kidneys and money and they in turn will find a suitable kidney for his sister. He does not have the money after being fired, but his girlfriend persuades him to kidnap the daughter of the plant he was fired from the owner and hold her for ransom. Of course as most revenge movies go, something goes terribly wrong. (I have always wanted to type that!!)

The story, filming, and violence is all stunning. An emotional film even for the biggest assholes you know..try it out, you will see!! This movie is one of the most brutal I have seen, so lay off any greasy food or I am pretty sure at least a little will come back up.

A friend gave me Martyrs for my birthday last year for a laugh I can only assume. My threshold for disturbing films is way down since I was teenager. After the detailed description of the film from him…I still haven’t bravely watched it. Also…adding Wolf Creek to most disturbing. Based on a true story backpackers in outback Australia are hunted and murdered. This was a first date movie gone wrong for me…and I refuse to go to the outback now.
