Purple Ponies and Duran Duran

Purple+Unicorn+Bike1

When you are a young child the stars are within reach of your fingertips and it seems like if you just grew a little bit more that you would be able to actually touch them. And in them all of our dreams are held.  We are told to wish upon a star, that the first star you see at night holds particular power, to watch for shooting ones because they grant the most special of all wishes.  Your dreams of a purple pony that at will could sprout a rainbow horn and silver wings seemed realistic. The window to the future is clear as if supernatural Windex has made them mystical with their futuristic movies playing reels of our lives when we are the all powerful adults that we will one day be.  Will you be a baseball player?  Will you be a comedic scientist?  Will you sprout to 6′ tall and drive against your genetics of short folk to be a glamorous supermodel?  It is never the mundane. It is never an office worker, or a machinist, or accountant.  Do you ever stop mid fold on your 14th pair of jeans you have washed that day, or half way through mowing the lawn to wonder what happened?  What happened to that star that was just RIGHT THERE?  I know when I am elbow deep in a dirty diaper holding my breath as to not dry heave and offend the little face in front of mine, while another person is asking where their favorite “white” shirt (out the 10 they own) is at, as another asks if you can open the new milk for them that I don’t have time to wonder about that star. About wanting to be Jennifer Beals in Flashdance/best writer in the world/rock-star/actress that was married to Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, there just doesn’t seem to ever be a moment….well I do sometimes still pine for that purple pony.

Pine for our purple ponies? I sometimes wonder if we got them just in a different way. Pretty sure I did. And sometimes when everyone is all tucked in and everything is silent I slip the kids Rock Band in and become the Rock God I could’ve been.
